Major Environmental Clean Up

Pier 70, nearly 70 acres large, is part of San Francisco’s waterfront and steeped in history.

The site was dedicated to the shipbuilding and manufacturing trades, with ships being built there as far back as the Gold Rush. In the 1880s it was the first site on the West Coast to build a Navy Ship and Union Iron Works built several famous ships there which went on to take part in the Spanish American War.

It continued to be involved in much heavy industry, including steelworks and it now to be the site for new investment preceded by a multimillion dollar environmental cleanup effort.

In the near future, the land south of Mission Bay could be developed as housing for 1,000 San Francisco residents, waterfront parks, new space for artist studios, and manufacturing and retail services.

Before work begins, however, an environmental review must be carried out, as an investigation by the Port several years ago revealed that soil contaminants could pose a risk to future site users because the decades of shipbuilding and heavy industry have contaminated the soil, which contains naturally occurring metals and asbestos from the previous operations.

No one Knows Where Naturally Occurring Asbestos Is

According to a new study, there are new areas of naturally occurring asbestos minerals which are more widespread than thought beforehand. They have been found in areas which were not thought to be at risk and not where people thought to look.

The areas contain natural asbestos which is called fibrous iron sodium amphiboles and fibrous actinolite. It has been discovered in Clark County, Nevada and it forms where several geographic features come together. In the case of Clark Country there was groundwater, which interacted with rock salt and a cooling body of magma way below the surface of the earth. These three things together created a type of rock and made its way to the surface as naturally occurring asbestos. Once affected by the wind and the rain it can be dispersed into the atmosphere and brings with it the risks of people breathing in the fibers which are known to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and other lung conditions.

There are many regulations created to protect people from exposure to mined and refined asbestos, but this naturally occurring asbestos is unregulated and nor it is classified as toxic under federal law even though it can be just as harmful.

New Trial Results in Asbestos Payout for Family

The family of Gordon Bankhead has been awarded a multi-million dollar asbestos mesothelioma settlement. His children and spouse alleged he was exposed to asbestos dust through his work with vehicle brake parts.

Gordon Bankhead worked as a parts man from 1965 to 1999, servicing and repairing heavy duty vehicles and in the course of his work he handled brakes containing asbestos including grinding them. Hence he was breathing deadly asbestos dust. Many of the brake linings he worked with were made by Pneumo Abex.

This was the second trial regarding the Bankhead family and defendant Pneumo Abex.

In the first trial Pneumo Abex were found to be 30% liable for his mesothelioma which he died from, aged 68 and the jury awarded the family around $9 million.

Pneumo Abex appealed the verdict, which was subsequently upheld, but this year there was a new trial to compensate his family for their loss of his companionship.

The trial took just 2 days resulting in a verdict of $11,000,000 with Emily Bankhead receiving $6 million in non economic damages and Tammy and Debbie Bankhead each received and $2.5 million.

World Asbestos Consumption Figures Released

The world asbestos figures have been released by the United States Geological Survey with production in 2013 being 2,019,000 tons, roughly the same as 2011 and 2012. The major producers of asbestos kept the same market share more or less, with Russian staying as the biggest supplier of raw asbestos fiber. China and India have ceased their rapid growth in consumption but Indonesia continues to increase its consumption unabated. In addition consumption is on the rise in countries where the use of asbestos has been lower in the past, specifically Bangladesh, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan.

However there are indications that some countries are beginning to look for substitutes for asbestos with the number of countries consuming more than 500 tons a year down from 37 in 2012 to 33 in 2013. It appears that support is growing to ban asbestos with discussions taking place at government and judicial level in Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brazil.

Asbestos consumption in Ukraine and Thailand are now falling rapidly following significant increases between 2000 and 2005. Annual consumption for both nations is now less than 30 percent of what they were in 2000 and 60 percent less than 2005.

Checking for Asbestos in Public Buildings

The United States banned use of asbestos in new construction projects more than three decades ago, but is still present in many older buildings as its heat insulation and fire resistance properties made it an ideal component of flooring, walls, ceilings and pipes.

But although many buildings still contain asbestos, as it wasn’t banned until the 1980s, there is no harm if they are left undisturbed, as asbestos is potentially harmful only when crushed and inhaled.

Two of the serious health issues which arise from inhaling the airborne fibers are lung cancer and mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the chest and abdominal cavity. However, since symptoms don’t usually appear until around 20 to 30 years after the exposure, it can be difficult to know for certain if a person is at risk.

In order to protect people from the dangers, any time someone wants to carry out modifications to a public building they must first submit a work order request to the Department of Public Works. DPW will then check the building for asbestos to determine if a trained professional is required to remove or deal with it. This would include even something as simple as pulling up a carpet or drilling holes as you never know what lies beneath the carpet or inside the wall.

Schools Checked for Asbestos

Following asbestos testing in schools in Orange Country, most of the schools will remain open as they pose no threat to students.

However, three elementary schools in the Huntington Beach school district, Hope View, Oak View and Lake View, will remain closed for up to two months while asbestos is removed from classrooms.

The campuses were closed earlier this month when asbestos was discovered in classrooms during a modernization project. The closures have meant that over 1,600 students have to take buses to classrooms in eight different school districts across Orange County.

Tests showed that most of the schools in Orange County had an insignificant level of asbestos in the air and that the amount fell far below federal standards for a hazard and would not pose a risk to staff or students.

Asbestos is a mineral that was widely used as fireproofing in building projects until the 1970s. Though coming into contact with asbestos which has not been disturbed is not harmful, it can become a hazard when the dust becomes airborne as inhaling asbestos fibers over a long period can cause cancer and other lung diseases.

What You Should Know About Asbestos Roofing

Asbestos is a building material composed of mineral fibers and prior to 1977 it was often used to increase the fire resistance and insulation properties of roofing products. It was banned in 1977 when it was discovered that exposure to asbestos dust can cause respiratory ailments and cancer.

Asbestos materials used in homes built over thirty years ago are most likely to be found in cement roofing, shingles, insulation and siding that was installed before 1978.  The only way to know if asbestos is present in roofing material is to have a sample sent to a lab for testing and this should be carried out by an asbestos professional

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends the best way to deal with asbestos products is to leave them alone as the main danger is when the dust is exposed during removal or repair or even taking a sample for testing.  Dangers also exist when materials age and deteriorate and the asbestos dust could be let loose into the air.

If you notice deterioration in your roofing and it was installed before 1978, complete removal may not be necessary.  Repair and sealing will involve covering up the materials to keep the asbestos in place so that the dust is unable to affect the health of anyone in your family and this is a recommended practice. There is no obligation to remove the asbestos, whatever some contractors may claim.

Warn Children of the Dangers of Asbestos

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), children can often be exposed to asbestos when playing and it is important that they be educated as to the potential dangers involved with asbestos exposure. In addition, although not yet completely proven, scientists believe that children breathe differently than adults; hence they may have an increased chance of breathing in more asbestos than an adult with the same level of exposure.

Children should be educated as to what asbestos is and how the fine fibers can become airborne and inhaled.  They should be told not to go into old and abandoned buildings, nor to play around any furnaces which were built before the 1980s. If you have any asbestos present in any area of the home, such as an outhouse, they should be warned to stay away

In addition they should be warned of the dangers of older pipes which may have asbestos cladding which could leak into the water, and so they should not drink from old public water fountains.

Did You Think Asbestos was banned in the United States?

Many people believe that asbestos is now banned in the United States, once it was discovered that people started to get sick following exposure to its toxic fibers and once it was known that asbestos can cause chronic respiratory conditions as well as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

In 1973 most spray applied asbestos products were banned for fireproofing and insulation and in 1989 there was hope of a full ban on the manufacturing, import, and sale of all products containing asbestos.

Unfortunately, in 1991, asbestos industry supporters successfully challenged and overturned the ban as petitioners argued that many substitutes for asbestos were equally as dangerous.

Nonetheless, six categories of asbestos-containing products remained banned today including some types of paper, flooring felt and new uses for the product.

However, there are still many products which contain asbestos in existence which can cause harm to those working with or using them. These include a variety of construction materials, automotive products such as gaskets and brake pads and heat resistant clothing made of asbestos such as aprons, gloves and welder’s blankets.

There is still progress being made towards an outright ban, as in state of Washington, under the Better Brakes Law, which was passed in 2010, all brake pads and shoes have to be asbestos free by January 1, 2015. A similar measure was also recently passed in California.

How Asbestos Contributes to Poor Health

A recent study published the journal, Health Affairs, has highlighted which factors contribute towards our health.

It found that environmental factors contributed around 5 percent. It is estimated that 90,000 deaths a year are caused by microbial agents such as bacteria and 60,000, some 3 percent, by toxic agents such as asbestos. The World Health Organization estimates that 3 percent of deaths in high-income countries are attributable to environmental factors such as air pollution, unsafe water, poor sanitation, asbestos and lead exposure.

The study goes on to say that around 10 percent of the deaths in the U.S. were attributable to poor medical care, and about 20 percent to genetics, or at least some genetic component.

Around 30 percent of deaths were accounted for by social factors such as racial segregation and low education and about 35% to behavioral factors such as smoking, around 19 percent of deaths in the U.S., poor diet and physical activity 15 percent and alcohol 4%.

Although behavior, genetics and social and economic factor are key determinants of health, so is the environment we live in, and exposure to asbestos plays a part in that.
